Year 1

Our Curriculum

We cover a range of interesting topics across the school year. The yearly overview provided gives an insight to some of the activities your child will be participating in and experiencing each term.

Year 1 Curriculum Overview

Class Information and Homework

PE Lessons

We have PE lessons twice a week so please ensure your child has their P.E. kit in school at the beginning of each week and it is named.

Phonics

We teach phonics each day using Bug Club. Children will learn a new sound each day and will practise blending, segmenting and writing in preparation for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check.

Reading

At Wingate Primary School, we aim to foster a love of reading and to increase exposure to different types of texts. Through regular reading, we aim to practise the new sounds which are taught daily in phonics, and to apply this to their reading.

We have a reading area in class and we encourage children to enjoy a variety of different books and to share these with their peers.

Maths

Children are encouraged to use Numbots online programme at home with a weekly target of around 10 minutes, 5 times per week, to build speed, accuracy and confidence.

We have a maths area in class where children are encouraged to use and explore a variety of resources including Tens Frames, Base Ten and Rekenreks.

Homework

Homework will be sent home with your child every Friday and needs to be returned by the following Wednesday. This will include a page in their Phonic Buster book, a new page will be set each week. A new reading book will also be sent home along with the yellow reading record for you to write comments in about your child’s reading. Homework

Children are also expected to log onto Numbots each week and we encourage children to complete tasks regularly. As well as this, children need to log on to Bug Club and complete allocated activities.

Rights Respecting homework will be sent home once every half term and will replace the Phonic Buster homework for that week.
